I had told the kids in the street that a gringo would send over a box with clothes.
He's a teacher, and he and his students did a superb effort to help out the poorest of the poor.
Every day the street kids asked me if The Box hadn't arrived yet!
Lots of these guys were wearing shirts that wouldn't even serve as a cleaning rag, so The Box was something they were really looking forward to.
So... when it finally arrived everybody went crazy and picked the shirts they liked best.
There was enough for everybody.
Even though they have nothing, they are still proud of themselves.
They always try to look their best. Go and wash their clothes in the lake.
Bathe while they wash their clothes. And ask for used toothbrushes or left over soap bars or deodorant and gel that guests have left behind.
So the 'new' shirts were a welcome gift.
It also reminds them that somebody cares.
Even though it is sent by strangers from far away... the "thank you's" are meant...
