A couple of you readers out there have been wondering where the Chavalos sleep. Most of them sleep in the streets. And depending on the time of the year they use different locations.
During winter (july august, ...) the try to find a dry place. They found that place, but after a couple of days, when the owner of the house found out these kids were sleeping under his porch, he put sand and garbage on the porch so it wasn't nice to sleep there any more.
Now it is dry, and they can pick any location. Jose Angel for instance sleeps on the reinforcement of the walls of the San Francisco Convent. It is a higher up place where drunks and dogs leave him alone. Daniel bought Jose Angel a pillow and a blanket to make the breezy nights a little more comfortable. And, although he's only 15, he takes care of a couple of younger kids who recently arrived in Granada. One of these kids was shivering from the cold, so he offered his own blanket to cover them up. On the next picture you can see the three of them sleeping peacefully, not realizing their picture is being taken!

Nicaragua is a warm country, but at night the breeze coming from the lake can be quite chilling.
They put their arms under their shirts in order to protect them from the cold.
I can't say for sure, but I expect the Police to track the Chavalos down in the next couple of weeks.
The Holidays are usually very busy in Granada, and the Mayor doesn't want all the tourists to see that there are poor kids in their town that have no food or a place to sleep. So what they did the past couple of years was, pick them up in trucks and put them in jail until the Holidays are over. It doesn't matter if they haven't done anything wrong, or if they're 23 or 9 years old.
Let's hope I'm wrong...!
