I've never used the stuff myself, the glue, I mean.
But here in Granada it is very popular amongst the street children.
Most of them don't sniff when I can see them, out of respect.
I told them that I probably won't be able to persuade them to give up the glue, but I don't want to see anybody sniffing, ever!
When I do catch somebody sniffing, (sometimes they're so out of this world that they don't even realize that they are doing it. To them it's as natural as breathing.) I tell them: Give me that jar!
Of course they don't want to give it to me. They always say: Why, what are you going to do with it?
And my answer is: Don't worry, you'll get it back. I only want to try it for myself to see what is so wonderful about it.
To which they reply: NO, it is bad for you. Don't start doing it. Keep away from it.
So I say: Well... if you know that it is so bad for you... why do you keep on using it?!
But I know that it is near to impossible to ditch the dirty habit.
Some guys whom have been with their family up north for months in a row, with no access to the glue, pick up the bad habit the moment they come back to Granada. All their friends reek of the stuff, and they gladly share their jar with their long lost buddy.
I have no material on this, but I suppose that it messes a lot with their kidneys.
It is the one complaint that everybody has. These excruciating pains in the kidney area.
They come here for "kidney pills". I don't even know if these exist.
What I tell them is to give up the glue, or suffer for the rest of their lives.
I will try to find more information on a solution. I have no idea of what is good or could be bad.
I've given them low dose aspirin and tell them they should drink two glasses of water with these "strong" pills.
At least they are drinking something then.
At times the pains are so serious that they need to be brought to ER asap.
There they get some IV drips and are sent back in the streets.
They feel better for a couple of days, but not before long, the pains return ...
If anybody has any ideas, information, help or medication that could help, please let me know.
I haven't had the time to do the research on the web about this subject.
Marvincito, Manuel, Franklin, ... there's a whole list of chavalos whom are having this problem.
This morning Franklin had a painful crisis. Who will it be tomorrow...
He took the bus to the hospital. I already know that he'll be fine after a couple of IV's.
At least for a couple of days or weeks...
Ana Maria had severe pains in her pelvic area again.
Turns out her ovaries are inflamed.
Tomorrow she has to go back for an ultrasound to see how bad it is.
In the meanwhile she has to apply a spray.
The spray was $5. More money than anybody would earn in a full day.
Impossible to get hold of if your a street kid.
There's always somebody in need of something.
Thanks to you, we are able to help out one way or the other!
