Alexander got bitten by a ferocious dog yesterday.
I sent him to the hospital to take care of it.
Like usual (all medication is supposed to be free) they were out of antibiotics (!) at the hospital.
So they only disinfected the area a bit and told the street kid to go and buy anti biotic injections at the Farmacia, and a shot against rabies.
By the time he got back from the hospital, the bite wound looked far worse than before! The whole area was inflamed.
I got Alexander the necessary shots, and already today his leg looked a lot better.
Gabriel came by this morning to say THANK YOU for helping him out.
His throat hurt badly, a couple of days ago. He too needed some shots.
"Ya estoy curado, gracias a usted" he said.
(I'm already cured, thanks to you)
Usually the street children don't have the money to buy medication.
Sometimes they don't even have enough to pay for the bus to the Hospital. ($0.25 one way).
Most of the time they just have to sit it out.
That's why some of them, like Franklin, have a permanent limp.
Not being taken care of when his leg was infected is the cause of this.
The other kids call him: "Pied fregado".
"Damaged foot", because he needs to walk with a home made cane.
He constantly falls over because of it and has dozens of scars to prove that.
But people here seem to be stronger than anywhere else.
They are taught to be tough from early on.
One of my workers came by to park his bike to go shopping on the market.
When he left, he put his 2 year old (almost) daughter on the bar of his bike.
He told her: " hold on to the steering weel, or you'll fall off!"
She can't even talk, and was balancing side saddle on this bar, cruising to the other side of town!
One sees the most amazing things here.
Five people on one motorbike is no uncommon sight!
