Because of a whole bunch of circumstances the poverty level has never been so high as now.
Foreign countries refuse to give donations because of huge fraud and no accounting for the donations.
Because of the financial crisis, tourism is way down compared to previous years, and that is the #1 income for Granada.
The rainy season was extremely dry this year. One or two showers a month is not enough.
This means that crops dried up and the price of rice and beans will go up again.
And these prices already doubled in the last three years.
People are having trouble to get by as it is .
They plan to impose taxes to the Pulperias. The small convenience stores where the poor people go to buy their supplies.
Prices are higher than in the supermarkets, but at least they can by on credit.
Now these stores will have to up their prices even more because of the new taxes.
They also plan to tax the remesas... the money sent by family from Costa Rica and the States.
Last night a bunch of street children were attacked by a couple of pandilleros.
They had knives and a baseball bat and hurt several of the guys.
Ernesto got stabbed in his hand, Marvin got beaten by a bat.
Several others have more injuries.
They don't even bother to go and report it to the police.
They don't do anything anyway. A policeman's wage is $100 per month.
Why would they risk their lives for less than 25 bucks per week...
The kids feel vulnerable and unsafe, and have no place to go to...
Even in their sleep they have to be alert..
And all that for a couple of belts and some used flip flops that they stole...
