One of the Chavalos has been working like a horse to get the money together to buy the things needed for the upcoming school year.
He needs to be ready to be picked up at 2 am. (yes, in the morning!)
Then, there is a long drive ahead in the back of an old truck, all the way to San Carlos.
He returns the next day at 8pm. (42 hours later)
That night, again he needs to be ready at 2 am.
The second trip goes all the way to Jinotega, at the Honduran border.
The workers sleep in an abandoned gas station and are being eaten alive by the bugs, and there is no way to shower.
He doesn't get back for three days on this trip.
After this long, uncomfortable trip, he works in the Chatarrera (junk yard with old metal).
For all this back breaking effort, he is paid C$200 (under $10) per week!
Talking about commitment to get the study money together!
Kids complaining that they have to wash the car once a week should try this for a month!
At times, one wonders why so many children are not in school.
With hardly enough money to buy food, the above situation might explain some of it.
I bet not everybody is that committed to go to school!
Diego Manuel, the guy whom is being taught how to read and write, his wife of 5 years is in the hospital with appendicitis. At first, they told her to come back in a month, there were no beds available.
Fortunately, one of our guests is making a TV show on health, and he sent them back saying that it was a matter of life and death.
And it was, because the next day, the appendicitis burst, and the girl was in a hell of pain.
They operated on her in a hurry, but a couple of days later, he wound burst open with pus.
Her life, again, was in danger.
All this time, her husband (24) and 5 year old daughter couldn't enter in the hospital because they didn't have an ID.
An ID or cedula is so hard to get hold of, you can't believe it.
And now even more, since they started charging money for it (against the constitutional law).
