Yesterday evening, three Chavalos came by to ask for flip flops. It was frustrating to know that there are 70 pairs of flip flops waiting in customs for charity.
Although all the items in these 3 boxes are meant to be given away to those who need it, customs fight the amount declared and are trying to get more import taxes out of it.
School supplies for the little school in one of the poorest areas of the city, flip flops for the street children, toothbrushes, ...
With less and less countries sending donations to Nicaragua, they need to find other sources of income, I suppose.
And guess who will be the victim of this, when nobody wants to send any more donations over?
Maybe things will get better (or worse) after the upcoming elections.
We'll see. In the meanwhile, we will continue to do our best to help out every which way we can.
